Tough Weekend On The Road For The Dragons
The Dragons had a tough weekend on the road at the hands of two former EPL clubs
On Saturday the Dragons supported by a large and very noisy traveling fan base visited Telford Tigers in the NIHL Moralee League game. The Tigers are riding high toward the top of the league and boast a wealth of experienced talent. The Dragons have continued to struggle and whilst performances have improved they are still searching for the result. The first period was frantic and was largely spent in the Dragons zone, but a superb net minding performance from #31 Bird and last gasp defending restricting the Tigers. Despite early fears, the visitors ended the period 0-3 and were disappointed not to have tested the home net more. The second period was far more open as the Dragons pushed to get back in to the game. This left a lot more space and the Tigers were able to use their superior speed and experience to start piling on the goals. The period ended early following an accidental facial injury to a Tiger that saw #55 Kennedy ejected from the game. The third period was a lot tighter and the Dragons put on a much better show for their traveling fans. #23 Simon Furnival was on the score sheet for the second week running.Special mention to Junior Dragon #4 Spridgeon who never took a backward step and deservedly picked up the Man of the Match award.
Final Score Tigers 11 – 1 Dragons
The following day Dragons took a heavily depleted squad across country for their second game of the weekend against former EPL opposition. This weekend was always going to be about survival, and to give some of our less experienced players a chance to play against quality opposition. To their credit the Pirates went 100% from the first puck drop and soon had the Dragons on the back foot. Two quick own goals, bouncing off Dragons skates, didn’t help, but that is the way it goes when you’re at the bottom of the table. The Pirates play at times was breath-taking and they never let the Dragons settle for a moment. The last thing the Dragons want is anyone’s pity. In a very one-sided affair, the Dragons never gave up and received a standing ovation from the whole crowd. The visitor will look to positives that included #23 Furnivle scoring his third in three. #72 Jones going the full length of the ice to score a great solo goal. And #12 Wigglesworth getting the final score. Surely “last goal wins?!”.
A mention must go to young players #4 Spridgeon and #3 Johnson who both had a big weekend.
Final score Pirates 20- 3 Dragons.
