The Dragons welcomed a powerful Whitley Warriors team to The Den on Sunday, with high hopes of building on their first win of the season, the previous weekend.
The Warriors were fast out of the blocks in what turned out to be a seesaw, roller coaster of a game.  Warriors experienced player/coach Longstaff scored first on 2:34, before former Dragon Kippin got the first of his …

The Dragons are delighted to announce the signings of Steve Hetherington and Brian Worrall for their 2017/18 Moralee Conference campaign. Hetherington joins The Dragons from the Blackburn Eagles where he most recently won the Laidler Conference Trophy last season. A two way centreman who’s work ethic and commitment may go somewhat unnoticed at times, will undoubtedly be a great addition for The Dragon. Dragons Player/Coach Scott McKenzie is aware of what Hetherington will bring to The Dragons line up; “Steve is a guy that I really did not like to play against. He is great on face offs, smart defensively and someone that we will be great on the PK for us.” “Steve might not lead the league in points, but the value he holds to a team is huge due to the defensive elements of his game. It is vital that we tighten up defensively and Steve will certainly help us do that.”

We spoke to Steve earlier in the week and he had this to say about moving to the Dragons

“I’m really happy to be joining the Dragons after originally thinking I would probably take some time out from playing in the league after the Eagles folded at the end of a championship wining season. With the addition of the EPL teams I think everyone is expecting a tough season and for them to be right at the top of the table. With such a long season consistency will be key and Scott has looked to keep the core of his team intact and make a few additions to build a team that can compete night in night out.”

Also joining The Dragons from local rivals the Altrincham Aces is Brian Worrall. A Manchester lad, Worrall is known for making smart plays and playing with a lot of heart. Coach Mckenzie is really pleased to have secured another experienced player in Worrall; “Again Brian is a player that I have played against in the past and I really believe he has something to offer our group. He can make good plays, is incredibly shifty and on a good line will put up points. Not only this, Brian wants to learn, wants to be coached and for a guy of his age, that is a great asset to have.” “Over the last month I have been looking at players, trying to add some depth to our line-up. Obviously losing a player like Marc Lovell really hurt us so it was important that I tried to steady the ship and get some experience back into the group. With Steve and Brian I feel like I have brought in that experience but also got two guys that want to be here and fit in with our ethos and the group.”

Brian who is no stranger to Deeside having played here for a season in 2012-13 had this to say about his return.

“I genuinely had no intentions of playing this year up until I played in the charity game a couple of weeks ago. Being back in the rink and around the lads I’d played with seemed to reignite my love for the game again. The locker room here is great they’ve always been a good bunch of guys, Scott’s ability as a player and a coach is no secret, so when he gave me the chance to play I couldn’t say no. It’s gonna be a tough season particularly with the former EPL teams joining the standard will be very high but I think that’s what you need, a level to aim at and work towards it will be a hard but productive experience for us as a group I’m excited to get going” .

Both Brian Worrall’s #21 Jersey and Steve Hetherington’s #93 jersey are available to Own & Loan. If you are interested in Own & Loan for either of these players jerseys, please contact us at info@dragonsicehockey.co.uk.
